UTRILLO, Maurice (1883 - 1955)
Utrillo was the son of the painter Suzanne Valadon, who introduced him to painting in 1901 as therapy, following the first in a series of alcoholic breakdowns which punctuated his career. Dubbed 'the most bohemian of bohemians', he specialised in Parisian street scenes. This view of around 1917 depicts the suburb of Sannois in the north-west of Paris, an area which the artist painted repeatedly after spending time in a sanatorium there in 1912-13. It was purchased by Margaret Davies in 1960.
