Medieval lead bulla
Medieval lead papal bulla of Innocent III (1198-1216)
The cast circular bulla is near-complete, with some damage on the both faces (with a diameter of 37.6mm – 38.8mm, a thickness of 3.6mm - 5.7mm and a weight of 42.4g). The bull is of Pope Innocent III (papacy: 1198-1216). The obverse face depicts the heads of the two Patron Saints, Paul and Peter within beaded frames and beneath the legends: SPA and SPE. There is a cross patée on a staff between the saints. The reverse face has the legend: INNO CENTIVS .PP.III There is an omega over the PP. There is a rectangular indent on the basal (bottom) edge and a depression on the top edge, probably from where the chord passed through the bull.
Innocent III, born Lotario dei Conti di Segni was one of the more powerful medieval popes and claimed supremacy over all of Europe's kings.
