Fete Champetre
This woodland setting, looking out from the trees towards the sunset, is typical of the landscapes Diaz painted in the Forest of Fontainebleau, south-east of Paris. Although a Realist at heart, he was also conscious of satisfying popular tastes. Here, the fountain and fanciful figures follow the eighteenth-century tradition of the 'fête champêtre' (country party).
