Demolition of Walnut Tree viaduct, 1969, photo

Western Mail & Echo Ltd.

Black and white photograph of the demolition of Walnut Tree Viaduct, September 14, 1969. The photograph appeared in the South Wales Echo on Monday 15 September, 1969 having been taken on Sunday 14. The following comment appeared with it:

Link with the Past Lowered A crowd gathers as one of the girder spans of the Taffs Well Viaduct is lowered. Part of the viaduct is being demolished to make way for the new trunk road between Cardiff and Merthyr. The present road was closed yesterday for the demolition work. Traffic was diverted via Caerphilly. I have it on good authority that the proper name of this viaduct was Walnut Tree Viaduct but I have no idea as to its origin. The crane used to lower the sections is one of only two of its type in Britain and is on hire from the British Crane Hire Corporation. It was built in Germany in 1968 at Gottiwald Werk, Dusseldorf and has the lifting capacity of 165 tons. It is manipulated by a left hand drive and rear steering. Its road tax number is NVP 957G.

Western Mail and Echo's reference number: 9420/69/28.
