Roman copper alloy scale pans
A pair of bronze discs, slightly dished with a ridged border, pierced close to the border by three equidistantly spaced holes. That such items sometimes served as a means of identifying the ownership of equipment in military contexts is demonstrated by a set of larger discs from Newstead. An uninscribed disc, of similar size to the Usk tiems, is known from Longthorpe. But it seems unlikely that the Usk pieces, which are more substantial in fabric, are the same class of object. They are perhaps more likely to have served as the scale pans of a small balance.
