Medieval gold finger ring
15th century gold iconographic finger ring.
The ring has a ridged bezel, the two faces being engraved with images of St Barbara holding a tower in her right hand (on left panel) and John the Baptist with halo in Lake Galilee (on right panel). The hoop is shaped as a twist or 'wreath'; the shoulders are decorated with sprigs and pentafoils, and each bears a single word to form the legend:
NUL AUTRE ('No other') in Black Letter script, between sprigs.
The inscription was originally recorded as NUL AWT ('None other')

Very many thanks for your accurate observation on the inscription on the Monkton ring reading "nul autre " and not ‘awt’ as in my original report, and errant ‘the’. We have updated our CMS records. The new digital images of finger ring inscriptions are a great improvement on the old colour slides, and we are always happy to update entries as they become available online.
