Hat

Scout hat with green and yellow plumed badge. Worn by the Duke of Windsor when he was Prince of Wales and Chief Scout for Wales

Scout hat of khaki-coloured felt; crown is deliberately caved in in 4 places; broad stiff brim (width = 9cm);

Around outside of hat, there is a 3.6cm wide leather strap with tooled lines along its edges. Narrow straps (width = 1.2cm) have been stitched to the ends, fitted with a D-shaped leather covered metal buckle to secure the wider strap.

The inner lower corner of the wider leather strap is secured to the hat by two stitches using thick white thread. Around the lower edge of the strap, there are 6 further holes with corresponding holes in the felt which indicate that the strap will once have been secured all the way round.

Beside the buckle, there is a circular metal badge (Ø = 3cm) with a fleur-de-lys design and the Scout Motto 'BE PREPARED'. The badge also features horse hair plumes, dyed yellow and green (colours specific to Chief Scout of Wales). It is secured to the leather with a split pin which is fitted through two rings on the reverse of the badge.

Hat has fastening of cotton cord (same colour as hat) which is threaded through two copper alloy grommets on either side of the brim and tied on top of the brim at centre front. The ends of the cord are finished with 2.4cm long metal clips to stop them from unravelling. The remainder of the cord hangs down below the hat and is secured under the wearer's chin.

The hat has a white silk satin lining made up of a central section and a broad bias-cut section around the sides which are adhered to the inner crown. The centre is printed in black with the maker's mark (Sutton & Torkington).

The inner edge is lined with a 4.8cm wide strip of soft leather (with tooled upper edge) which is stitched over a folded piece of coated bias-cut fabric. At the centre back the leather strip is tied together with a white silk (?)-wrapped cord (tied into a bow).
