Roman pottery flask
Archive report:
The rim/neck of a flask in a fine iron rich paste with occasional large red brown inclusions. The fabric is very light grey off-white, it is probably a New Forest product (Fulford 1976, 24) and if so it is of Fulford's type 1 or 2. There is at least one other New Forest product from this site (cf BF; 685) AD 300-330. It is just possible that this vessel is an ungentarium, cf Riley 1979, 300-301, where it is proposed that such vessels were produced not at the point of manufacture of the ungent, but at the poinf of sale. The form is possibly similar glass forms eg Isings 1957, type 82 which it is not possible to closely date.
