Portrait of a girl

MANCINI, Antonio (Mancini trained in Naples and visited Paris in 1875-76 and 1877-78. In 1883 he settled in Rome. With Sargent's help he achieved a considerable reputation in Britain. His figure paintings were influenced by seventeenth-century Old Masters. They include glittering light effects and incorporate thick impasto, sometimes textured with metal foil, string and other materials. Cafodd Mancini ei hyfforddi yn Napoli, gan ymweld â Pharis ym 1875-76 a 1877-78. Ym 1883 ymsefydlodd yn Rhufain. Gyda chymorth Sargent, gwnaeth gryn enw iddo'i hun ym Mhrydain. Roedd dylanwad hen feistri'r ail ganrif ar bymtheg ar ei beintiadau o ffigyrau. Yn eu plith mae effeithiau golau disglair ac maent yn cynnwys impasto trwchus, gyda ffoil metal, cortyn a defnyddiau eraill yn cyfoethogi'r gwead o bryd i'w gilydd.)

W.R. Sickert was a friend of Mancini. In 1927 he explained the artist's working method: 'His paintings were done through a wire grille, whose squares correspond with a grille before the sitter. The marks of the grille remain. The sitter being, as it were, pinned down, retained of his mobility alone the facial expression. But, trembling and snorting within that restriction, there is an extraordinary vivacity, there is power and a dashing impasto'. Margaret Davies purchased this painting in 1913.
