Sampler
Linen, embroidered with coloured silks in eyelet, satin, cross and herring-bone stitches. Thirty-eight rows containing alphabets, numerals, versions of Psalms XXXIX and CXVII, the date 1710 and initials AI, and the following inscription: “my mother hatherto hath don her best to make / me a work woman as well as the rest / Anne Iater is my name and England is my nati / on and south work is my dwelling place and / Crist is my salvation." The rows are interspersed with narrow stripes of ornament and are followed by seven narrow bands of satin stitch.
