Palazzo Eleanora Duse, Venice
SICKERT, Walter Richard (1860-1942)
This work depicts, on the left, the Palazzo Barbaro-Wolkoff and, on the right, the Palazzo Dario, near the mouth of the Grand Canal. It was probably painted in 1901 during one of the numerous long visits to Venice which Sickert made between 1895 and 1904. Sickert lodged nearby and frequently attended 'conversazioni' at the Palazzo Dario. The celebrated actress Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) had an apartment on the top floor of the Palazzo Barbaro-Wolkoff. Margaret Davies purchased this work in 1935.
