Pozzuoli
WILLIAMS, Penry (1802-1885)
This oil sketch showing the town of Pozzuoli, near Naples, is spontaneous, informal, and strikingly fresh. But Penry Williams, like many other artists at that time, never thought such studies would be seen in public. He once told his sponsor Joseph Bailey that his collection of small, unfinished sketches were "only useful to myself and would be uninteresting to you".
