Lovespoon
Lovespoons were traditionally carved by men as love tokens. We don't know the story behind this lovely sycamore example. Was the maker called John? Or was it made by a man to show his love for another man?
The custom developed from making spoons for the home. The skill was in carving very intricate lovespoons from one piece of wood using simple tools. Nowadays commercial woodcarvers make lovespoons as souvenirs and for celebrating family events.
