Roman melon bead
Melon bead of blue glass. Late 1st century A.D.
Melon beads are ‘gadrooned’ – decorated with parallel vertical ribs, giving the bead the appearance of a melon.
Gadrooning can be created by running a curved tool down the side of the glass before it’s cooled. Some melon beads may have been created by pouring glass into a mould.
