Rag mat
Hooked rag-rug made by Mary Ann Thomas, Garnant, 1930s.
Hooked rag-mat with central floral motif worked in purple, blue, yellow, pink and green on a mottled black ground. This is surrounded by a striped border made up of the same colours. Each corner bears a floral shape with a central diamond. Front: strips of wool fabric have been hooked through a substrate. The wool strips have been densely worked making it impossible to see the substrate fabric clearly. Some woollen strips are woven in plain and twill weave, while some others are a fine knitted construction. Back: the mat has a tan felted interlining which can be seen through the interstices of the loosely woven hessian lining. The reverse has edging strips of navy wool. The strips of navy fabric are joined by diagonal seams at each corner.
