Figure

Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))

Figure of General Sir Garnet Wolseley on hoseback facing right, white eathenware, heavy body, standing on an irregularly shaped oval base inscribed in raised capitals (traces of gilding remain). Figure in military uniform of black boots, white breeches, white jacket, pink sashes crossing chest from both left and right shoulder, also military decorations of three stars and a bar of medals, black whiskers and hair, white helmet, seated astride a gilt spotted horse resting left forearm and hand on horse's mane, right hand resting on thigh, orange saddle with a line of beading round, and a blue fringe and harness, horse with head bowed and right leg bent. Bright gilding detailing on figure and horse but very worn, front left leg of horse yellow from discoloured repair.
