Roman stone rotary quern (both stones)
Upper and lower stones of a rotary quern, with an iron cross-bar surviving at the centre of the upper stone.
These stones were used to make flour. Grain was dropped through the central hole and when the upper stone was rotated, the grain was ground into flour between the stones.
