Quilt

Wholecloth quilt made in 1890 by an itinerant quilter at Trefigin Manor Farm, in the parish of Monington, Pembrokeshire, by a seamstress from Cardiganshire who visited annually to make and repair bedding and clothing for the family. Itinerant quilters were once a common sight in rural west Wales. They would travel from farm to farm each year making quilts, bedding and clothing for farming families. As well as payment for their work, the itinerants would also receive food and lodging from their hosts.

Covered in pink cotton sateen on both sides. Quilting motifs include a circle, snail and trellis pattern. Carded wool filling. Quilting pattern is hand stitched with two cream coloured threads used as one. Edges are closed by a double row of machine stitches using pink thread. One side is made up of three lengths of fabric (joined by two machine-stitched seams). Other side is also made up of three lengths, but one of the outer lengths has five small sections added along one end to make up the length. The fabric used is the full width (about 73cm). Selvages on both sides.
