Colwell, David (b. 1944)

Folding chair and ottoman, black-stained ash and bamboo.

The chair in two interlocking sections, the back section comprising two curved side rails tenoned into a turned cylindrical top rail and joined below this with lengths of bamboo and lower down with a plain wood rail, the ends of the top rail with turned grooves round each of which is bound a length of black cord formed into a loop by means of a bamboo toggle, the seat section comprising two similar curved side rails tenoned into a turned front rail with turned grooves at each end over which fit the loops of cord to hold the chair together when folded, these side rails also held together by lengths of bamboo and by a plain rail towards the back, short dowelled rods protruding outwards from the side rails near the midpoint and designed to sit in one of three notches in each of the side rails of the back section to provide adjustable positions, the seat section also attached to the back section by two black textile bands wound round the front rail of the seat section and and round short brass rods fitted to the side rails of the back section, two lengths of bamboo stitched lengthwise into each of these bands.

The ottoman in one piece, comprising two side rails steam-bent into a U-shape, standing on one side of the 'U', with a turned end rail at the upper end, the side rails also held together by eight lengths of bamboo and by a pivoting rod into which are tenoned two flat rails with wedged ends that fit into one of three grooves cut into a cross rail tenoned between the lower end of the U-shaped side rails.
