Early Medieval bone spindle whorl
Spindle whorl made from the head of a femur. The type goes back into the pre-oman Iron Age.
NMB. This object is dome shaped with a flat cut bottom and a flat cut top. Although it has a central (drilled?) hole the outer circumferance is not truely round- this may make use as a spindle whorl unlikely. Perhaps a large counter or bead is more likely?
Bone spindle whorl from Dinas Powys hillfort, south Wales. 450-700 CE. The same technology was used to spin wool for thousands of years.
