Roman copper alloy plate brooch
Hinged star-shaped enamelled plate brooch with a projecting cup-shaped stud attached at the centre. The circumference of the brooch is scalloped to form an eight-pointed star with each point terminating in a small enamelled disc. The enamel decoration on the plate proper consists of two zones, the outer including blue enamel, the inner, red, separated by a narrow bronze wall concentric with the central stud. The stud has a central knob encircled by a groove but was never enamelled. The hinge for the pin and the catchplate are housed behind the appropriate enamelled discs on the circumference.
