The Palazzo Dario
Monet painted this view of the Palazzo Dario, near the mouth of the Grand Canal, in several sessions, probably during his 'troisième motif' between two and four o'clock in the afternoon. The upper storey and the left half of the facade of the Palazzo Barbaro-Wolkoff next door are trimmed by the edges of the canvas - a compositional device derived from Japanese woodcuts. A gondola marks the dividing line between the palace and its reflection. Margaret Davies purchased this work in Paris in 1913.

This painting is currently on display in Gallery 16 at National Museum Cardiff, and we have no plans to move it in the coming months.
The Palazzo Dario is such an beautiful building - I hope you enjoy your visit to see this painting, and that it will further inspire your work! We have a lot of Venetian scenes on display - my favourite is the Palazzo Camerlenghi by Sickert :)
