Auger
A twist auger for boring holes 2.6cm in diameter. It comprises of a bit (the cutting part), on a shank which ends in a tang and horizontal barrel eye, Fitting through the eye is a wooden handle. The screw lead at the tip of the bit pulls the auger through the hole, reducing the amount of pressure required. (Salaman Dictionary of Woodworking Tools)
The horizontal barrel eye is a section of tubing threaded at both ends on the outside welded to the shaft/shank of the auger [RP; 16/03/2009]
