Medieval pottery vessel
Gower/Lower Tawe - Sandy gritted (fabric 2) Hard, buff-grey fabric with numerous small to medium sandy grits with occasional calcite fragments. Surfaces are dark grey varying to dark brown, and appear to be finished to an almost burnished appearance. A few body sherds have vertical applied strips, and one vessel has finger indentations on the upper edge. A common characteristic is an internal bevel; the relative thickness of these rims in contrast to the thin body of the vessels is indicated by the propensity to break at the neck as seen in the illustrated vessels. Other rims have a raised band on the outer, upper edge, a feature seen also in assemblages from SW England (Pearson 1984, Fiche I A10-11) . The fabric is represened in seven vessels in periods 1 and 2, Sherds present in later periods are residual.
