Roman stone quern
A single fragment comprising approximately 32 per cent of an upper stone which has a thickness of 69 mm. at the circumference, and an estimated diameter of 0.425m. A narrow margin circumscribes the upper surface, and confines a spacious, slightly convex hopper, which has an estimated diameter of 0.355m.; it is however breached by a shallow channel and a roughly rectangular chase is sunk within the surface of the hopper, almost on the same axis. The thickness of the stone contracts to a mere 9 mm. at the fracture near the bottom of the hopper within which faint traces of the original dressing still persist. the sides of the stone which are somewhat irregular but approximately vertical, lack any trace of dressing, and even the treatment of the depressed, concave grinding face is wholly wanting. The fragment is in a very poor and friable condition, for weathering has not only attacked and removed alomost all of the surface dressing, but has also smoothed and rounded off the angles of the stone.
