Colonel Thomas Aubrey (1740-1814)

HONE, Nathaniel (1718-1784)

Thomas Aubrey (1740-1814) was a Lieutenant in the 4th Foot from 1766 to 1771, and wears that uniform here despite having been promoted to Captain in another regiment. A younger son of Sir Thomas Aubrey of Llantrithyd, Glamorgan, he later served in Michigan during the American War of Independence, and was a Member of Parliament for Wallingford between 1784 and 1790. Hone, an Irishman and founder member of the RoyalAcademy, had a successful career in London as a painter of portraits which are often notable for their brightness.

Col Thomas Aubrey was the father of Sophia Elizabeth Aubrey (1792-1873). She married Charles Spencer Ricketts. Her son was Charles Aubrey Ricketts 1814-1901 who had to change his name to Charles Aubrey Aubrey to inherit as a condition of Sir John's will. Sophia inherited the unentailed estates of Sir John Aubrey 6th Bt in 1826 and lived at Dorton House the home of the late Sir John. Col Thomas Aubrey also had a son Thomas (1778-1806) who also served in the army and was killed 1806.
