The Queen on her way to open the new Welsh Assembly, Bute Street, Cardiff
Taken in 1999, this photograph depicts Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Prince Charles en route to the official opening of the new Welsh Assembly, which signified the transfer of legislative power of self-governance to Wales by the UK Government. Wales voted in favour of devolution following a referendum in 1997. The royal carriage is captured against a backdrop of graffiti that reads ‘Independant Tropical Wales’, which could be interpreted as a subtle act of protest against sovereignty and the union. Amusingly, it appears that an attempt has been made to correct the spelling of ‘independant’ in advance of the Royal visit.
