Early Medieval penannular brooch (replica)
Full replica based on the fragment of lead penannular brooch from Dinas Powis (62.203/C.2). Main body of brooch is circular in section, with flared terminals. Pin attached. The terminals are decorated in relief, and the design related to the Irish series of zoomorphic penannular brooches with champleve enamelled terminals. The cross bar and drop shaped motive atthe hoop end are clearly the last vestiges of the animal eyes and snout of the zoomorphic penannular. Current thinking suggests this the original is part of a failed attempt to produce a die from a wax model and may have reached the site as scrap rather than have been produced there.
