Late Iron Age copper alloy plaque

Copper alloy, rectangular-shaped plaque with an embossed design consisting of four conjoined, wiry, S-shaped scrolls terminating in raised roundels. Embossed, comma-shaped scrolls, similar in form to the four conjoined, S-shaped scrolls, continue the curve from the outer two roundels to give the overall impression of five conjoined circles arranged in a slight arc. The S-shaped scrolls and the outer two comma-shaped scrolls are similar, if not identical, to those design elements employed on the 'square' plaques (Acc. nos. 44.32/78-79, 44.294/12). The long sides of the plaque have a repoussé border (width c.1mm) which stops 5-6mm from one of the short ends in an area which has been deliberately flattened out while at the other short end the border design is flattened out by an incised line running c.2.5-3mm from the edge suggesting that the plaque was overlapped at either end by other plaques. The plaque is pierced by six fixing holes, two of which are set in central bosses in the decorative design, and the remainder around the edges or in the corners.

Bronze plaque with Celtic Art decoration, 1-100 CE.

Find Information

Site Name: Llyn Cerrig Bach, Cae Ifan Farm

Collection Method: chance find
Date: 1942-1943

Notes: Found during the construction of an airfield at RAF Station Valley. Some certainly, the rest probably, from a wet meadow which formed the margin of Llyn Cerrig Bach. The exact depth below the grassy surface at which the objects were deposited is not known. The bog was excavated to a maximum depth of 20 feet. A few objects were found on the spot, after the peaty deposit had been won from the boggy margin of the lake. The rest, with the exception of 44.32/58, were found on that portion of the adjacent aerodrome on which the peat from this site had been spread. Animal bones were associated with the deposit and many metal objects were stained with vivianite.
