Waistcoat
Embroidered waistcoat, 1770s. Part of a three-piece suit worn by Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 4th Baronet (1748-89). Possibly worn at his coming of age party in 1770.
Green silk satin fronts, paler silk plain weave lining and back. Double pockets lined with cream satin and chamois leather. 10cm long slit at lower centre back; slits also at lower side seams. No lacing holes or adjustment. Green satin matches coat lining. Gold, silver and green-coloured metal purl, metal sequins and floral ribbon embroidery at front edges, hem and pockets, matching embroidery on coat, with tassels, bows and swags. Some areas are padded/raised and covered with white or pink satin. Remainder of front is embroidered overall with single floral motifs in silk and metal purl. Round neck, no collar. Cutaway at bottom. Eleven button fastening, silk covered buttons with matching embroidery. Button holes edged with metal purl thread. Three covered and embroidered buttons under each pocket flap. Some staining and wear.
