Oral history recording with Irma Caffarelli who was born in the mountain village of Costa in North Italy and moved to Wales in 1956. Part 2 of 3 (AV 11347 - AV 11349). Recorded as part of the Italian Memories in Wales project (2008-10), delivered by ACLI-ENAIP and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
00.21 It was a farming community. Irma’s father owned farmland, but it wasn’t common for people in the area to own land. She talks in detail about going to dances in the village. She describes the house that she grew up in and talks about making bread and pasta, food mostly came from their own garden. She talks about going to the market on Thursdays. She lived with her father, two sisters, two brothers and her sister in law when her brother went to war. Her sister stayed at home when she and her father went to the city to work. She talks about her father’s seed business; they would travel around markets selling seeds with a horse and carriage. She mentions her family nickname- which derived from the seed company they owned, and describes her father.
