Early Mesolithic chert adze

A black chert early Mesolithic adze. The tool is made on a flake and the ventral surface has less working than the dorsal resulting in its having a 'D'-shaped profile. The flaking on the dorsal surface is invasive and covers the surface resulting in there being no traces of cortex present. The tool has been carefully shaped and has received a tranchet-blow to create the cutting end.

Chert adze or axe found at Trwyn Du, Anglesey. Chopping tools were fitted into wooden hafts and used for wood-working.
