The young housewife
BONVIN, François (1817-1887)
Although largely self-taught, Bonvin was influenced by Francois Marius Granet and Gustave Courbet. Accepted by the Salon from 1847, he was successful during the Second Empire and received the Legion d'Honneur in 1870. This cabinet painting of a young woman peeling potatoes dates from around 1855. Its realism is based in part on the genre scenes of Jean-Baptiste Chardin (1731-68) and the seventeenth-century Dutch School.
