Dancer looking at the sole of her right foot
Degas modelled numerous figures, more as an independent exploration of form than a preparatory stage in the production of finished sculpture. In 1919-21 bronze editions of 73 figures found in his studio were produced by the Hébrard foundry. Originally modelled around 1890, this figure reflects direct observation and a knowledge of Classical and Renaissance sculpture. Gwendoline Davies purchased this cast in 1923.
Comments from Sarah, an 18 year old student: In the Degas, this movement is expressed in every part of the body; in fact, it’s as though he’s chosen this pose to celebrate the graceful way the body moves as the woman looks at her foot whilst keeping balance. I particularly like the realistic position of her shoulder blades.
Modelodd Degas nifer o ffigyrau, a hynny fel archwiliad annibynnol ar ffurf yn hytrach na cham rhagarweiniol wrth gynhyrchu cerflun gorffenedig. Ym 1919-21 cafodd cyfresi efydd o saith deg tri o ffigyrau a ddarganfuwyd yn ei stiwdio eu cynhyrchu gan ffowndri Hébrard. Cafodd y ffigwr hwn ei fodelu'n wreiddiol tua 1890, ac mae'n adlewyrchu sylwadaeth uniongyrchol a gwybodaeth am gerfluniaeth Glasurol. Prynodd Gwendoline Davies y cast hwn ym 1923.
Sylwadau gan Sarah, myfyrwraig 18 oed: Yng ngwaith Degas, mae pob rhan o’r corff yn mynegi’r symudiad hwn; yn wir, mae hi fel pe bai wedi dewis yr ystum arbennig hwn i ddathlu symudiad gosgeiddig y corff wrth i’r ferch edrych ar ei throed gan gadw ei chydbwysedd. Rwy’n arbennig o hoff o siâp realistig ei phalfeisiau.
