Police tunic
Police Sergeants Tunic from South Wales Constabulary, used in the 1980s.
Single breasted uniform tunic, made of twill woven black fabric with black synthetic twill lining. 2 vents at the back. Patch pockets at both sides of chest and hip. Chest pockets have single vertical box pleat in centre; all fastened with buttons & flaps. The domed, white metal buttons (4 down the centre front and 1 on each of the pockets) have the inscription SOUTH WALES CONSTABULARY and a crown in the centre. There are 2 white metal lapel badges in the shape of the Prince of Wales crest. The sergeant's chevrons on each sleeve (silver metal threads, machine embroidered onto a black fabric patch) are surmounted by another Prince of Wales crest: gold coloured metal wire and blue thread embroidery on black ground. White metal badges of individual numbers '1349' are fastened to both shoulder straps. At the inner shoulders there are double welted slit openings that allow access to attach the metal numbers (so that the fastening doesn't rub or catch on the shoulders) Looking through the openings, one can also see different layers of interlinings, including a type of yellow foam (polyurethane?) and a white synthetic, non-woven interlining.
