The Owl's Oak, Penllergare, photograph

Albumenised salted paper print, from collodion glass negative. Mounted on card. View of stream with trees overhanging woods in background. Signed by photographer. This image was exhibited at the Photographic Society Exhibition of 1854.

This ancient oak tree on the Penllergare estate was known as the Owl’s Oak. The tree was a subject that John Dillwyn Llewelyn returned to many times and appears in a number of his photographs. As a keen botanist, he had carefully managed and planted up the woodlands on inheriting the Penllergare estate in 1831. Today, after years of neglect, the estate is managed by the Penllergare Trust. This photograph is mounted and signed by the photographer and was exhibited at the Photographic Society Exhibition of 1854.
