Sir Josiah John Guest (1785-1852)
Guest joined his family business, the Dowlais Iron Company in Merthyr, in 1807. During his lifetime Dowlais became the largest ironworks in the world, its growth fuelled by the demand for armaments in the Napoleonic wars and by the international development of railways. He was Merthyr’s first MP and promoted the education of his workforce and their families.
