Medieval lead ampulla
The ampulla is incomplete, missing the neck (with a surviving length of 35.2mm and a weight of 38.8g containing some sediment). The body is partially open below the neck and has a maximum width of 37.8mm and a thickness of 9.0mm. A small portion of the lower neck is present (with a width of 21.5mm). The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has seven bold and curved ribs, producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59), Type I. The ribs are slightly wider at the base and narrow towards the neck. The reverse face is flat and plain with a bevelled edge. Casting flashes are evident along the edge.
