Flak jacket

Light grey flak jacket with machine embroidered African National Congress (ANC) logo above breast pocket. Worn by Hanef Bhamjee.

Ssleeveless waistcoat/flak jacket made from grey tabby woven fabric, with copper alloy zip CF fastening. Two patch pockets at both sides of chest: with a smaller pocket applied onto a larger one. On the PL, both larger and smaller pocket have flaps that are closed with Velcro tabs. On the PR side, the larger pocket has a plastic zip-fastening along the side, whereas the smaller pocket has a flap that is closed with a Velcro tab; it also has a grey mesh panel in the centre. Further down are further sets of patch pockets, with a smaller one sitting on top of a larger one. The smaller pockets have a flap fastened with Velcro tab and the larger pockets are fastened with a plastic zip across the top. Above those lower pockets are long horizontal plastic zips which extend across the whole width of the front which give access to deep pockets that reach down to the hem. Corresponding pockets can be accessed from the inside of the jacket. They are placed a few centimetres lower. The fabric that separates inner and outer pockets is an orange-brown tabby woven synthetic fabric that has a slight sheen.

Front and back are joined by shoulder and side seams. Upper back and front are reinforced with a double-layer of self-fabric. At the front, the outer fabric is constructed with a seam just below the shoulder. At this seam there are two tabs of fabric that hold a D-Ring. A further D-ring is attached to the inner edge of the PL chest pocket. All edges are finished with self-fabric binding. Machine embroidery above the PL chest pocket, depicting the ANC (African National Congress) logo, which features a spear, shield and wheel, as well as the flag (3 horizontal stripes of black green and gold).

The back is comparatively plain: there is a seam across the upper back (below the seam, there is only one layer of fabric). In the middle of the seam there is another tab holding a D-ring. On the lower sides/at the waist there are self-fabric straps that are fastened onto glide sliders buckles. The buckles are attached to tabs that are held by the side seam.

Illegible white label at inner left side seam.
