Lady's coat

Hunting jacket, about 1790-1800. Belonged to Morgan family, Golden Grove, Flintshire.

Very short double-breasted jacket made from red woollen fabric, with 10 gold-coloured buttons on either side of front, up to shoulder height (only botton two used for fastening). Four further buttons on short tail of jacket. Buttons are marked with 'HH' within circle of guilloche pattern. Long tight sleeves with two self-covered buttons at cuffs. Front and lower back of bodice are lined with same red wool fabric, centre back panels not lined (apart from strip along neck with pinked lower edge). Sleeves lined with undyed linen tabby. Red silk tabby ribbon stitched across inner centre back. Black-painted metal hook on inner proper left (near lower edge) for fastening. Strip of white linen interlining for reinforcement along row of buttons. Along most edges, the red fabric is not turned in, but ends in a raw edge.
