Tulip Woman

Vyse, Charles (Apprenticed to the Staffordshire pottery manufacturer Doulton, as a modeller and designer, he progressed via Hanley School of Art to the Royal College of Art, and was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1911. He set a studio with his wife Nell at 14A Cheyne Walk, Chelsea in 1919, until 1940. They modelled and made slip-cast figures, mostly in editions of 100, including 'character' figures based on life studies of street vendors, as well as allegorical subjects. Vyse's figures form part of the tradition of naïvety and nostalgia running through British art of the 1920s. He also made high-fired stoneware vessels of Chinese type, and is thus a significant figure in the development of British studio pottery.)
Nell, Vyse

Figure, earthenware; 'Tulip woman' - a standing figure on an oval base, carrying a baby and selling bunches of flowers from a basket; painted in polychrome enamels.
