Two Ladies Reading

SHUNSHO, Katsukawa (Probably from a samurai background. He wrote poetry. He was a pupil of Katsukawa Shinsui, and became famous for his portraits of kabuki actors in the Meiwa era (1764-72), taking over this role from the Torii school. He was one of the greatest Ukyo-e painters of the eighteent century. He had a large number of pupils who adopted the first part of his name, eg Shunko, Shun'ei.)
