Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658)
Artist: BRITISH SCHOOL, 17th century
Cromwell was an East Anglian squire and MP. Although he had no military experience, his leadership was crucial to the Parliamentarian victory in the Civil War, and he became a leading figure in the Republican Commonwealth Government. From 1653 he ruled as Lord Protector. Cromwell's great-grandfather, Morgan Williams, was an innkeeper from Glamorgan who married into the family of Henry VIII's minister, Thomas Cromwell.
