Roman copper alloy binding
Strip of sheet binding. Traces remain to show where two strips of sheet have been lapped together to form a single piece. One long edge of the binding is smooth and fairly straight the other is very irregular and gives the impression that the binding was torn hastily or carelessly from the object to which it was attached. There is a fold line in the binding close to the irregular edge. The whole appearance suggests the binding had been partially flattened out, perhaps for re-working. There is no evidence how the binding was attached to the surface it protected.
