S.S. ELLI, glass negative

ss. ELLI (1114gt) : Built 1890 as cable laying ship RELAY (1198gt) by R. Thompson & Sons, Sunderland, for the Central & South American Telegraph Company, Peru. She was used primarily as a repair ship but occasionally laid short cables. 1920 – Transferred to the parent company, All American Cables. 1932 – Sold to Dutch East Indies Exploring Company, Nevada (same name) 1937 – Sold to Adelphi Vergottis Ltd., London and renamed ELLI, managed by Aegeon Steamship Co. 1938 – Acquired by General Emmanuel Giannoulatos (Greek Consulate at Shanghai) and used initially to transport Jewish immigrants to Palestine. On January 31st, 1940, the ship ran aground and sank at Lilleshand, Norway. The wreck was sold to a Norwegian and repaired reducing her to 1114gt. 1942 – Now owned by Skibs A/S Bjornefjell and renamed BJORNEFJELL. 1947 – renamed BOTA. 1948 – renamed FINN. She was broken up at Antwerp in 1952.
