Roman pottery lamp
Complete lamp in red ware, no slip. There is a blurred stamp on the base reading: COMMUNIS. There is soot around the nozzle where the wick has burned.
“Communis was an extremely prolific Italian manufacturer second only to Fortis, but…local copies of the Italian originals are far commoner than the originals themselves north of the Alps. The stamp is also very common.”
Source: Excavation in the Legionary Civil Settlement, Caerleon. (Unpublished) by GC Boon, Assistant Keeper of Archaeology, National Museum Wales, Cardiff.
