Welsh costume petticoat
Flannel petticoat skirt woven in navy wool with a red stripe. Made from 1 piece with a seam at the centre back and gathered into pleats at the waist. The hem is turned and decorated with a 2cm wide red wool tape slipstitched with navy cotton to the underside of the skirt, extending approx 1cm below the hem. It is 1 long piece with a shorter, newer looking strip attached at the back (possibly a repair) The front of the waistband is 4cm wide and made in 3 pieces from blue damask cotton with a floral pattern. The lining of the waistband is made from brown linen tabby made in 4 pieces. The top of the waistband is sewn by machine and the bottom edge, of both sides are slipstitched with black cotton thread. The skirt is fastened with 2 hook (both white metal) and eye fixings (1 white metal 1 brass) sewn to the waistband with black cotton thread. The skirt opening measures 28cm from the waistband and each side is bound with a 2.5cm black silk ribbon machine sewn on the front side, turned and slip-stitched on the reverse (there are machine stitch-holes on the reverse, suggesting that it had be used for something else.
