Boy's jacket

Red flannel hunting jacket, 1882. With stand collar and white belt, facing of white on front and metal buttons with bunch of grapes design. Worn by Douglas Morgan, Golden Grove, Flintshire (later Cae Gwyn, Flintshire).

Jacket made from red tabby woven flannel, whereas white fabric at belt and belt loops, cuffs and collar is twill with raised nap. The lining only extends along the torso down to waist and appears to be bleached (?) tabby-woven bast fibre; sleeves and tails of jacket are not lined. Blue marks on lining surrounding armholes. Jacket is machine stitched. Belt is 5.5cm wide and threaded through two 2.5cm wide belt loops. There is a 20.5cm long slit in the tail of the jacket (centre back), with pleats along either side.

Nine metal hook and eye fastenings down centre front (only down to waist); initially hooks are on the right (at neck), then alternating between hook and eye; hooks and eyes are sandwiched between red upper fabric and lining. Belt also to be fastened with two hooks and eyes. 1.6cm wide white braid hand-stitched (through to lining) to both sides of centre front opening: braid is arranged horizontally, starting from the centre front, stitched down for a length of 9.5cm, then folded back on itself for a second length, arranged parallel to the first; the ends of the braid are pointed. There are 12 strips of braid, six on each side. Twelve metal buttons (Ø=1.2cm) are stitched near the centre front opening, in-between the two lengths of braid. There are a further two buttons across each shoulder.
