Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of Queen Victoria, creamy earthenware, crackled glaze, finely detailed, standing on an oval base inscribed in gilt script, dressed in state robes largely in white with gilt detailing, wide full skirt with two tiers decorated with an impressed diaper pattern, long tassels from wrists, green garter sash across chest from right shoulder, black spotted grey fringing to robe, naturalistically painted face, brown hair, crown over a long headress decorated with impressed gilt circles, arms crossed loosely under chest.
