Samples of printed calicos, suitable to be made-up into dresses, sent to a potential customer in the 1840s.
Until the end of the 1800s, owing to the general lack of ready-made fashion, shops and dressmakers promoted cloth rather than clothes. Fabrics not frocks would be on show in shop windows.
